I write, speak, invest, network, and question to stimulate fruitful conversation. Let's talk about human flourishing! It begins with freedom. Holy leisure is the key to human being, freedom and generativity. Please join me in the adventure of realizing Christ!
Catholic Educator
Education is for Freedom!
I’ve spent many years learning about education, improving on my own education, teaching my children in our home school, guest lecturing, presenting papers at academic conferences, creating classes for college and high school students, offering my poetry workshop in Catholic schools, teaching at a community college, speaking for home education conferences and writing about all this. The core of all my work as an educator is the freedom of the human person. This is what relates education to my book about Sabbath-keeping (Souls at Rest) and my book about cultivating a capacity for freedom (Souls at Work).
So much of my own learning and my teaching of others has occurred within informal conversations that I am now focusing more and more on stimulating that sort of conversation. Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper calls conversation “the context of truth,” and so I encourage parents, especially, to cultivate great conversations within their homes. Naturally, I have a book in progress about conversation as the critically necessary sphere of engagement with ideas!
Conversation about books has often been the best help to people thinking about education. Friends who read well and share what they learn are a rich educative environment, so I hope to be one for you. Here are insights from my reading.
Please watch my blog for more education conversation!
