May They All Be One
There is power in our unity!
Chiara Lubich, in May They All Be One, describes the theology of unity that God entrusted to the Focolare, the Work of Mary. Her experience of learning to live in constant mutual love with her community members “was so vivid…we felt that every word uttered by Christ was love.” It’s a small, but powerful book, with implications for community life at every scale.
Although electricity has the potential to produce light, light is actually produced in an electric bulb only when the two poles make contact, and current flows between them. In a similar way, when mutual love was flowing between us, uniting our hearts, it caused us to experience something new: we felt we were experiencing the meaning of the words, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst” (Mt 18:20)
Since Scripture tells us we’ll be known by our love for one another, and our unity in the bond of love, this would be a good light to turn on. I hope you’ll find power in the simplicity of this message, as I have.
The process of declaring Chiara’s sainthood has begun. I’m asking for her intercession to spread the idea of praying for unity in the Body of Christ on the 17th of each month, in recollection of Jesus’ prayer for this unity in the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 17. Will you join me, and let others know? Here’s the image I’m posting on Facebook each month:
