I write, speak, invest, network, and question to stimulate fruitful conversation. Let's talk about human flourishing! It begins with freedom. Holy leisure is the key to human being, freedom and generativity. Please join me in the adventure of realizing Christ!
New Fire
I’ve often cried out in prayer when far from being in a state of true prayerfulness. I seem to find myself stale, or burned out, or fading away. It’s not that my faith itself comes and goes, but that the feeling of intimacy with God, or of zeal for the Faith, just seems to be gone.
These moments remind me what a gift is the consolation of sensing God’s presence; that the sense of zeal is the work of the Spirit within me, and not of my own making. I realize I’ve allowed this, that, and the other thing to fill the space, and choke the fire of my interior life. Turning to God, the only Remedy, I am always renewed.
Note: The photo here was taken by my son, Nathan, of friends gathered around a huge bonfire in our back yard. Glorious! I wish I had fire like this inside all the time – zeal for evangelization!
New Fire
Just now, my ashen fire is spent –
I need new air, new breath, new wind.
Come, blow, come quicken and disperse
the detritus that suffocates and chokes
this flame.
Seek out and kiss the sparkling ember,
and embrace the fading coal.
Then, in the turning pause
before consuming fire roars anew,
be Thou its only food
and purify my soul.
