  • Unless your Sabbath is three-dimensional, you’re not getting the real deal.

  • Speed and stagnation are opposite enemies of Sabbath rest.

  • The Church needs writers and artists!!

  • Holy Leisure is the key to human being.

  • Charlotte Ostermann is the last person you’d expect to write about Sabbath rest!

  • A ‘purpose driven’ life can be dangerous.

  • Sabbath can only be fully understood in light of the Eucharist.

  • There are ‘bubble-bath’ Sabbaths, and ‘pointy’ Sabbaths and Sabbaths that lead to true freedom.

Fr. Korda interviewed me on Wineskins about Three-Dimensional Balance.

(starts at 9:24)

Listen to my interview on Relevant Radio

(starts at 38:01)

  • Holy leisure builds our capacity to bear tension.

  • When we lose the capacity to see, to know poetically, we lose capacity for Christ.

  • To be free, you must be three dimensional.

  • Speed can make us ‘violent’ people, if we aren’t careful.

  • Creativity is a function of deep rest, hard work, and intense delight.

  • True freedom can be cultivated only by true leisure.

  • Danger: If you don’t respond to the idea of Sabbath, you may be tempted to ‘idea-olatry’!

  • People with no time for holy leisure need it most.

  • Sabbath has implications for evangelisation, art, economics, family life, culture, prayer, and more.

  • We are free from the law of Sabbath-keeping because it has been fulfilled in Christ.

Three-Dimensional Transcendentals

Three-Dimensional Transcendentals

Benedictine College hosted a Symposium for Advancing the New Evangelization in 2014. The theme was Transcendentals as Preambles to Faith, and I got to propose my take on that as a paper. Anyone who knows me could probably have bet good money I’d do something ‘three dimensional’ with that, and they’d have won those bets. […]

A Love Poem for Two Voices

A Love Poem for Two Voices

In a discussion of my poem by this title, we look at the pain a woman may feel upon being loved by Christ. It is sometimes a very difficult thing to be loved, and to receive love. Many women have related to my example of a woman who fights that love as though her life […]

Logs On Fire

Logs On Fire

St. Teresa of Avila had such great advice for us on how to pray. Her ‘method’ is simple, but profoundly helpful. I’ve noticed that the simple, interior hospitality toward God is the most helpful disposition to cultivate in order to avoid intellectual confusion and ideology that interferes with that sweet communion of the heart. I […]

Flatitudes and Floatitudes

Flatitudes and Floatitudes

Do You Suffer from PERS?!?!? In a recent talk – Home Schooling to Rock the World – I mentioned some symptoms that a person may be suffering from ‘post-Enlightenment reduction syndrome,’ (PERS) or ‘flattening’. This is the atrophy of one’s analogic sense – a reduction in the metaphoric dimension of human being. The problem is […]

Spiritual Dialogue

Spiritual Dialogue

Spiritual friendship begins with unity, and unity begins at the Cross of Christ. We need help learning how to approach and enter into dialogue with people of other faiths, lesser faith, or no faith, without denying our own  beliefs. St. Pope John Paul believed this kind of communication is the key to evangelization in our […]

Stumbling Into Humility

Stumbling Into Humility

Struggling with pride? Here’s an exercise in humility you can repeat as often as needed: learn something new in front of your children. What better way to teach them perseverance, a teachable spirit, poise in the face of frustration, and ‘everyone’s a dummy at something’?

Colin Beavan Had an Impact on Me!

I love Colin Beavan…not just his book, No Impact Man, but the author himself… …for being deeply human and vulnerable and honest…for sharing his life and thought with me through writing well and truly of his experiment in personal environmentalism. He and I would find little to agree about and much to disagree about if […]

Is This Your Un-Making??

Is This Your Un-Making??

Consider a jar of salsa. There’s nothing dangerous about it…or is there? As food, the salsa may be perfectly nice to eat, but it’s also a symbol of something that’s going very wrong in the realm of human being.

We Will Be Like Trees

We Will Be Like Trees

I enjoyed creating this talk to fit into a women’s retreat about Christ’s offer of “living water”. They gave me a free hand to choose my topic and approach, and I chose the promise, in Psalm 1, that we “shall be like trees, planted by streams of living water.” Their focus was on the woman […]
