SAW 7: Waves of Meaning
What are story waves?
Just as sound is made up of complex combinations of vibrational waves, story can be thought of as a weaving together of several, or many, waves. The backstory that informs an author’s narrative, but is not included in it, is like the deep, inaudible frequency of a very low note. The transcendent meaning that points to a character’s destiny adds ‘high notes’ to the mix. The many ‘waves’ that make up the ‘middle range’ are like a symphony of life stories – amplifying and interfering with one another, and forming a complex unity over time.
How can people be ‘silenced’?
Loss of contact with reality leads to loss of affection, or flattening of emotions. Failure to ‘be moved’ leads to a lack of responsiveness, which is a form of silence. People are also silenced when they lose the power of words – “the power to take meaning from and put meaning into words” (SAW Pg. 40)
Last, they are silenced when they withhold their own ‘sound’ – their opinions, their needs, their perspective on problems, their songs. If your voice is not heard, you’ve been silenced, and you should wonder who is served by that silence.
