I write, speak, invest, network, and question to stimulate fruitful conversation. Let's talk about human flourishing! It begins with freedom. Holy leisure is the key to human being, freedom and generativity. Please join me in the adventure of realizing Christ!
Glory to God in the Depths!!
I love this thought from a poem by G. K. Chesterton: Gloria in profundis. Glory to God in the depths, in the lowest things, at this time of year when we sing, “Glory to God in the highest”! Since most of life is spent doing the lowest things – diapers, scrubbing toilets, changing oil and brake pads, filling in new planning calendars… – what a great thing it is to learn to be amazed by them!
Glory to God for the good bacteria on our skin and in our digestive systems!! Glory to God for hot showers! Glory to God for the baby in the diaper, the indoor plumbing, the ability to make a car last fifteen years, the freedom to choose how I will use my time! Glory to God for the deep love that sustains relationships that are pretty rocky on the surface! Glory to God for the deep, interior place where He dwells within me and awaits my conversation! Glory to God for the deep sleep, the deep bathtub, the deep freezer, and the deep soil of my garden.
Relationships seem more and more shallow in these days of speed and ‘communications media’. Perhaps it will take more appreciation of small, hidden, profound, low things to recover friendship in its full dimensionality. Glory to God for Real Letters from friends! Glory to God for face-to-face chats! Glory to God for new baby meals, parenting advice, loaned dresses, time for tea, handmade gifts, requests for help, potluck dinners, game nights, book-talk groups, shared poetry, and people to take excess zucchini off your hands! Glory to God for bath time with kids, piggy-back rides, backyard campouts, breakfast in bed, back rubs, traditional birthday meals, silly songs, long journeys, fireworks, reading out loud, and sick days together!
Well, I could go on and on, as Gloria in profundis involves every little thing that reminds me to praise and thank God. Blessings to all who read this. I pray for you and yours!
