I write, speak, invest, network, and question to stimulate fruitful conversation. Let's talk about human flourishing! It begins with freedom. Holy leisure is the key to human being, freedom and generativity. Please join me in the adventure of realizing Christ!
Heavenly Storytelling
Everybody has hopes about what heaven will be like. Sometimes they wonder, though, what there will be to do. Not to be disrespectful of the sufficiency of seeing Christ fact to face, it hardly seems fulfilling to spend eternity in a blissful, floaty, staring contest. Given that everything that needed doing is done, and Heaven needs none of my puttering, my hospitality, or my activism, um…eternity is a long while to twiddle your thumbs!
Here’s what I think we’ll be doing: hearing The Story over and over, from everyone’s perspectives, of Man and of God’s dealings with him. We’ll all need to catch up on the ‘family history’. Each one of us will hold his tiny part of the vast story to tell and retell until (and could it ever happen??) The Story was complete.
Instead of Gramps telling the same stories over and over, he’ll tell a story, and then hear surprising new twists from the audience as they reveal the parts of their own stories that were interwoven with his. Every re-telling, for every new collection of listeners, would be full of new revelations – interconnections across space and time, in the economy of grace, that you never suspected were part of your own narrative.
This is what ‘revisionist history’ should aspire to. Each of us will emerge from the limited perspective of his own lifetime and find his own little role in The Story is at once smaller and greater than we suspected as we lived it in time. Heaven will be full of surprises, whatever the weather is like. I can hardly wait. This is going to take forever!
